We celebrated my mom's birthday yesterday. And coincidentally, I discovered that 61 is a "big" thing for celebration in the Chinese tradition. But wait a minute...wasn't the magic number 70 I learned 2 months ago on my dad's birthday? Hmm...
Turns out that for females, the magic celebration numbers we traditionally celebration are 61, 71, 81, and the pattern goes on depending on how long one lives. For males, it's 60, 70, 80, etc. So now my question is, why is it that Chinese traditions only begin to link age with celebration when we're old and wrinkly? As the pattern goes, I should really throw big banquets at 11, 21, 31, 41 and 51 too! The mysteries of tradition...people didn't even live until 60 back in the day!

I didn't know what about this *1 thing... what is it about?
yes, apparently as children we're suppose to pay for big banquet for our parents when they have those special age birthdays to celebrate the greatness of their age...
